On Feb. 28, The Catholic University of America celebrated cultural diversity with Global Fest, held in the Edward J. Pryzbla University Center. The festival featured representatives from embassies in Washington, D.C., and campus cultural organizations, as well as performances, cultural displays, and foods from countries around the world. Sponsored by the Center for Global Education, the festival is a feature of International Week, which took place at Catholic University Feb. 25 through March 1. In a welcome break from D.C.’s climate of gridlock, students and faculty from Catholic, George Washington, and American universities worked Feb. 27 on a house for the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, an international sustainable home competition. This collaborative team of 75 students began construction on a one-of-a-kind, energy-efficient home custom-designed to foster the healing of a U.S. military veteran. (Photos by Ed Pfueller)
In a thrilling doubleheader, Catholic University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams captured Landmark Conference Championships Feb. 23 at the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center. On Feb. 11, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced he would step down. The University has a special connection to Pope Benedict XVI. Nearly five years ago, on April 17, 2008, the Holy Father visited the campus of The Catholic University of America, one day after he had visited the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The pope greeted a crowd of thousands that had gathered on the University Mall. He met with the bishops of the United States in the Basilica and presided over Solemn Vespers in the Crypt Church on April 16. The next day, he delivered a formal address on Catholic education at the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center.
Despite temperatures in the low 20s, a joyous atmosphere was created by approximately 500 CUA students who gathered on Jan. 25 for the 40th Annual March for Life on the National Mall. The annual University Mass in Honor of St. Thomas Aquinas, sponsored by Catholic University and the Dominican House of Studies, was held at the Crypt Church in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Jan. 29. The Mass was celebrated for the first time in association with the National Catholic Educational Association’s National Catholic Schools Week. Very Rev. Brian Mulcahy, O.P., prior provincial of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph, was celebrant and homilist at the Mass. On January 19, the CUA campus kicked off the second semester with the continuation of the Cardinal Spirit Challenge as the basketball teams hosted conference rival Scranton. The Cardinal Spirit Challenge is a new program designed to promote school spirit and attendance at University events. Faculty, students, and staff celebrated the creation of the School of Business and Economics on Jan. 16. The celebration began with Mass in Caldwell Chapel celebrated by University Chaplain, Rev. Jude DeAngelo, O.F.M. Conv., and was followed by a reception in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center. Students were able to ask questions and hear brief remarks from University President John Garvey, Provost James F. Brennan, and Dean Lawrence R. Poos. CUA’s women’s lacrosse and baseball teams volunteered at the D.C. Armory on Jan. 19, the National Day of Service held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. On Friday, Dec. 7, the music of the season filled the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during the 24th annual Christmas Concert for Charity. Sponsored jointly by The Catholic University of America and the Basilica, the concert featured the Choir of the Basilica, conducted by Peter Latona, director of music, and performances by musicians from the University’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music. Leo Nestor, Justine Bayard Ward Professor and director of CUA’s Institute of Sacred Music, conducted the Chamber Choir, University Singers, University Chorus, and the CUA Symphony Orchestra.
